A fiddling chip of "Heroes," plus "The Incredibles" (2004), Fantastic Four, and satire = No Ordinary Goggle box Show (it was just too unique to terminal)!
I might as well equally just get this out in the open right at present: "No Ordinary Family" is ane of the best shows I've seen on Goggle box in recent years. No, I'k not existence hyperbolic. I mean, it really is that good. It was a evidence that kept me thoroughly entertained, and on the border of my seat constantly waiting for the adjacent large surprise (and episode).
And therein lies the problem: "No Ordinary Family" is non an Ordinary TV Show and therefore, it was merely too unique to final across one single season with an open-ended bewilderment climax before it was unceremoniously canceled past NBC, presumably for reasons related to poor ratings.
Due to my work schedule, I was unable to meet the demands of staying upwards late at night to lookout "No Ordinary Family" while information technology was still airing regularly on TV; I'thou really quite unable to exercise this with many Television receiver shows I want to meet considering of my schedule. Hence my review here is based on the season-1 DVD, which I've spent the concluding three days getting caught up on (TV-on-DVD is a real life-saver).
Information technology angers me that genuinely unique (if not totally original) TV shows are a rarity these days, especially in 2012. It happened when my favorite TV show inside the last several years "Heroes" was unceremoniously canceled two years ago (and I was a huge, loyal fan of that prove, past the way), and it happened when "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" was canceled the twelvemonth before. I think that when information technology comes to this sort of television receiver - and I'm sure I'm non alone on this - Americans just have as well short attention spans to fifty-fifty be able to handle "No Ordinary Family," which while not too intelligent or sophisticated, is at to the lowest degree entertaining, gripping, and watchable.
In speaking of the show's merits, information technology has many. Essentially, "No Ordinary Family" is a play on mod-twenty-four hours comic book superhero mythology. It borrows trace elements from the aforementioned "Heroes," besides as the blithe Pixar hitting "The Incredibles" (2004), and adds in a lot of humorous comic book references and family unit dramedy dynamics to arrive stand up alone on its own two feet. Information technology's all done in light, fun, good humor and information technology's not pickled in angst or nostalgia (imagine if Christopher Nolan was backside this series - personally, I'thou glad he wasn't because his so-self-serious intensity would have killed whatsoever and all fun to be had here). And it also boasts some impressive, flick-quality special furnishings on-hand here, as well.
As a superhero fan and comic volume reader, just beingness a superhero fan and comic book reader are just 2 of the reasons why my curiosity caused me to wander around to "No Ordinary Family"; it's a delight to watch the show and its self-knowing characters piece of work with and around contemporary and traditional comic book lore to make every episode count in some way toward the bigger flick.
This serial had me hooked from the discussion "go". It gets off to a bit of a slow start, but rapidly finds its proper basis halfway through the start season.
Things begin with a plane crash in the Brazilian jungle. The iv grouse members of the Powell family, on a family trip, miraculously survived, just are forever transformed by the consequence. Of class, the experience has caused them to bail closer to each other than they were earlier, but they've too unexpectedly gained superpowers. And so the once-normal, tiresome, and "Ordinary" Powells are thus turned into an "Extraordinary" family of super-powered super-folks:
- Family patriarch Jim Powell (Michael Chiklis), a police sketch artist, gains superhuman force and durability, like Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible from "The Incredibles" and Ben Grimm/The Matter from the Fantastic Four (in a strange little irony, Chiklis portrayed the latter in the two live-action "Fantastic Iv" movies), and uses these abilities to battle crime on a daily footing
- Mother Stephanie Powell (Julie Benz, of "Dexter"), a noted research scientist and driven careerist - the rest of the family was accompanying her on a scientific expedition when their plane crashed in Brazil - acquires superhuman speed and a rapidly increased metabolism (which allows her to heal near instantaneously from any injury)
- Teenage daughter Daphne Powell (Kay Panabaker) develops telepathy, meaning she tin can read minds, which later evolves into "pushing," being able to "push" thoughts into people's heads; both abilities allow her to increase her social standing/status a fiddling bit at loftier school
- And teenage son JJ Powell (Jimmy Bennett) acquires higher cerebral functioning, which basically makes him a super-genius able to instantly understand and comprehend post-graduate-level mathematics, acquire new languages nigh immediately, and sympathize & comprehend complex machines and structures; I really wish I had this ability for my high schoolhouse math classes.
So apparently, they demand to go on their powers a secret just every bit the series progresses, they endeavor to learn the source of their powers while also battling all sorts of crime high and low. Eventually, powerful forces volition cause this family to use their special abilities and bail together as one to confront an even more dangerous threat to humanity. Also along to help them are Stephanie's perky comic volume fan-daughter lab assistant Katie Andrews (Autumn Reeser) and George St. Deject (Romany Malco), Jim'due south twice-divorced best friend who is too an banana district attorney and also establishes their base of operations in his garage.
As I stated earlier, this is a bang-up, fun, funny, activity-packed superhero TV serial that doesn't have itself besides seriously; it's all good fun. But as well to reiterate my points from earlier, people seem to accept increasingly diminishing attending spans, which more than probable led to this show'southward premature demise later on simply one season. This last part fabricated me especially angry upon learning the truth near its fate.
In short, information technology was besides fun, and also "Boggling," to last.
